Review: The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell

The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Family Upstairs

On her 25th birthday, Libby receives a message from a solicitor that she has inherited the family house in Chelsea. Anxious to find out about her past, she heads to the house left to her to find out what happened to her family and where her brother and sister could be. What she finds is a hidden past that will change her future forever. Told from the point of view of Libby, Lucy and Henry, each of them with a connection to the house, the story goes back and forth from modern day to before Libby was born to show everything that happened leading up to Libby's adoption and what happened after.

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I was really looking forward to this book because I really enjoy Lisa Jewell's books. I'm not sure if it was me since I've been in a bit of a reading slump, or if it was the book itself. For me, it felt as if it moved slowly.

What would you do if you inherited a huge house from a family that you never knew? Being adopted when she was just a few months old, Libby never knew about the family that left her the house. Lucy has been waiting for the baby to turn 25 for 25 years. Saving this date in her phone, but how is she going to get from France to London without any money. Henry has also been waiting for this day, telling the entire story from start to finish.

Even though this wasn't my favorite Lisa Jewell book, I will definitely be reading more.

Review: Forget You Know Me by Jessica Strawser

Forget You Know Me by Jessica Strawser
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Published: February 2019

Liza and Molly have been friends forever. As they've grown older, they've grown farther apart. So this video chat between them is long overdue. Molly gets up to check on her kids during their conversation and Liza sees an intruder. When Molly vaguely responds to Liza's texts and phone calls, she becomes very worried about Molly and along with her male best friend, Max, she drives all night from Chicago to Cincinnati to check on Molly. But Molly is still acting like nothing has happened and shuts the door in Liza's face. When Liza returns home, her whole world is turned upside down, so she decides to move back home. With issues with her brother and this thing going on with Molly, she's not sure where she is going to stay or what she is going to do with her life.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I was very intrigued by this book at the start, it grabbed my attention from the start. Somewhere about half way through though, it started to fall off and I just wanted to know what was going to happen. It was missing the twists and turns I was looking for to keep coming around every corner.

What would you do if you saw an intruder in your best friends house, but she was very nonchalant about it? You'd want to do all you could to help her, right? Molly doesn't want the help Liza is offering, but why? Is is because Molly has a whole host of secrets she is keeping herself? I wanted so much to happen in this book, but there was no big OMG or WOW factor. I enjoy Jessica Strawser's books and I will probably read whatever is next from her.

Audiobook Review: No One Is Coming to Save Us by Stephanie Powell Watts

No One Is Coming to Save Us by Stephanie Powell Watts
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Published: 2017

No One Is Coming to Save Us is a hard book to explain. Set in North Carolina it follows the life of 5 people who are related and not related.

First there is Ava who is desperate to have a child, but she barely sees her husband Henry and she has had too many miscarriages to count.

Then there is Sylvia, Ava's mother who is the stereotypical black mother, in everyone's business and determined to get the best for her child.

Up next is Jay Jay who used to live in the same small town. At the first opportunity he moved away from the small town, but now he is back and wants to win back Ava's affection.

Henry, is Ava's husband and he hasn't done right by her and when she finds out, all bets are off.

Don, is Sylvia's husband, but they haven't lived together since Ava was a little girl.

All of these people are living their lives in small town North Carolina. There really wasn't much of a climax or anything to look forward to in this book. It was a disappointment for me.
