Review: Her Name Is Knight by Yasmin Angoe

Her Name Is Knight by Yasmin Angoe
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Published: November 2021
Her Name Is Knight (Nena Knight #1)

Nena Knight is an assassin. She kills for the greater good of the African People and Black People all around. Her past is one that is quite unbelievable and when her past makes contact with her present, she has to make decisions to protect those she loves.

Nena was born Aninyeh in the African village of N'nkakuwean. One day men came and took away everything from her, and her life was forever changed. When she has been rescued from the torture she endured as a child, she learned that these men were dead and she felt as though she could breathe a little easier. When on a dispatch, she finds that this might not be true. Determined to find the people who destroyed her life, and destroy theirs, may be a dispatch she's just not ready for.

This book was full of twists and turns. I really enjoyed it. It did start a little slow, but like any action story, that's the way it goes sometimes. When the ball drops, it drops hard. This book will have you in tears, angry, and rooting for Nena in more ways than one.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a book with action and a strong female lead.

**trigger warnings for murder, sexual abuse, rape, kidnapping**

Everywhere You Don't Belong

Claude is your typical high school kid, trying to figure out what he is going to do for the rest of his life. He lives on the South Side of Chicago, where life is not always the greatest. Surviving his parents leaving him, rioting and violence in his hometown. When he meets Janice, he think he may have found the one person to make the journey a little better, but Janice has plans of her own that may or may not include Claude. Together or apart, will Claude be able to make it through this tumultuous life, or will he fall victim to his circumstances.

Thank you to NetGalley and Algonquin Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I can say that I was hooked on this book from the start. Claude seems like a shy guy who doesn't have too many friends. Not that he doesn't want friends, but he just likes to stick to himself. At first while reading the book, I was a little concerned about the writing style. But it fits for a boy of that age who is unsure of himself. This book was a quick read with a lot of dry humor.

You don't hear as many reports about the violence in Chicago, but it is ever prevalent. Thankfully, I have never felt the fear of violence just from sitting on my porch, but Claude feels it and even though he tries to escape it, it seems to follow him.

I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend for high school boys who are unsure of their future.

Audio Book Review: Best Day Ever by Kaira Rouda

Best Day Ever by Kaira Rouda

Best Day Ever

Paul is determined to make this the best day between him and his wife, Mia. Paul has planned an entire weekend for them at their cottage at the lake, and nothing is going to ruin his plan. But Paul has something more sinister up his sleeve. Does Mia know what is about to happen? Does she really know her husband at all? Told from Paul's perspective, find out how his best day ends up.

This book grabs your attention from the very start. You already know that Paul is going to be someone you are not going to like. They really picked the right narrator for this audio book. I felt as though he captured Paul exactly. I wanted to jump in the book and smack him myself.

To put it bluntly, Paul is an egotistical asshole. He thinks he is better than everyone and no one can beat him. He believes he is above the law and that no matter what he does, he won't get caught. He preys on those that are weak and rich. They don't see it coming until it's too late.

But will Mia find out what Paul is up too before it's too late? Will she be able to get away from him. They have been married for several years and they have two young children. Her father warned her against marrying Paul, but at the time, all she saw was a man who loved her and was devoted to her. As time went on, she began to see him for who he truly was, but is it too late to get out?

I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Review: Not That I Could Tell by Jessica Strawser

Not That I Could Tell by Jessica Strawser
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Published: March 27, 2018

Six women from the small town of Yellow Springs, Ohio decide to get together for a few glasses of wine and some conversation on a Sunday night. This is the first time they have all been gathered together like this. Surprised that their baby monitors are able to reach to Clara's backyard, they enjoy the childless night. The next morning, one of them is missing. Is foul play a part of the disappearance or did Kristin simply walk away from her life? Admittedly, even though they have been neighbors for a while, no one really knew each other all that well. Will the police be able to find Kristin? Did her husband have something to do with it?

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I'm not sure why, but I had a hard time connecting with this book. While I was intrigued by the story, I didn't find myself drawn to find out what was going to happen next. It took me 10 days to read this book which is very rare for me.

What would you do if you woke up from a girls night out to find out one of the girls and her twins had disappeared in the middle of the night? Gone without a trace. Most of the women felt guilty because they couldn't remember what had happened the night before and if Kristin had said something that would help to locate her now. Everyone looks to Clara who lived right next door and who's son was in class with Kristin's twins, but she knows as much as the others, which is not much at all. How well to we really know our neighbors? We're on the outside looking in, but do we really know what goes on behind closed doors? Kristin's husband, Paul, the local OB/GYN seems like the kind of guy everyone would like, but what secrets of his own is he hiding. Did he do something to make his family disappear? After almost a month, the police have all but given up the search, but incidents in the neighborhood, cause them them to question whether they should or not.

Review: Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney

Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Amber is in a coma. She can hear the people around her, but there is nothing she can do. The book travels back to the events leading up to the coma and the diary of a young girl with a lot of troubles. This book is full of shocking events. Is her husband to blame for the accident that put Amber in a coma? Will her sister be able to find out what is going on before Amber wakes up? Will Amber ever wake up? How will the events of her past shape her future if/when she does wake up?

Thank you to NetGalley and Flatiron Book for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I must say that I'm just as confused now as when I was reading the book. Usually for me it is because the book travels back and forth through time, but this time, the story itself was confusing. You think you may know what is going on, but then a curve in thrown into the story and you have no idea what is going on. The story held my attention and I was able to finish it rather quickly, but even days after finishing it, it has left me with questions.

Is Amber really as bad as you think? What about her sister Claire? Who is the real culprit in all the disaster that has happened in their lives?
